All but one higher seed won on its home court in the first round of the Section III girls’ winter volleyball playoffs, and a poor weather forecast shifted the schedule for games the rest of this week.

Each of Thursday’s playoff matches was postponed, moving them to Friday and Saturday, with semifinals scheduled for Tuesday ahead of the Feb. 15 finals in Ilion.

Two more postponements followed Friday.

Central Valley Academy played its way into the Class A quarterfinals opposite New Hartford, the defending champion and No. 1 seed, with a 3-2 victory over Watertown Tuesday. Sophomore Mia Russo put down 16 kills, while Miley Rando and Trinity Pedersen each had nine for No. 8 Central Valley Academy (7-11) which was swept twice by New Hartford’s Spartans (17-1) in Tri-Valley League play during the regular season. New Hartford will host the rescheduled quarterfinal Saturday.

New Hartford and Central Valley Academy were two of 33 area schools that took snow days Thursday. Rome Free Academy (17-1) and Camden (7-9), seeded second and seventh in Class A, were two of the schools that didn’t close, but they also postponed their match and will now meet Friday at Rome’s Strough Middle School.

Syracuse’s Christian Brothers Academy (10-2), last winter’s Class B champion, and Whitesboro (9-8), seeded third and sixth, had their match postponed and will make it up Saturday at noon in Syracuse.

East Syracuse-Minoa (16-4), the fifth seed and third-place finisher behind co-champions New Hartford and Rome Free Academy in the Tri-Valley League’s Colonial Division, played its way into the semifinals by beating No. 4 Carthage 3-0 on the road Wednesday.

Class B Canastota and Chittenango also won quarterfinal matches played Wednesday. The other side of the bracket was wiped out Thursday, and another postponement Friday realigned those matches for Saturday.

Top seed Canastota (17-1) swept its match against Vernon-Verona-Sherrill to run its win streak to 15 matches, while Chittenango, the fourth seed, defeated General Brown 3-0. The wins set up a Wedneesday semifinal in Canastota where Chittenango was a 3-0 winner in December; that was the first of three consecutive victories for Chittenango which has won back-to-back matches only once since.

Second seed Holland Patent (14-6) hosts Sherburne-Earlville (4-14) at 10 a.m. Saturday after the match was postponed for a second time Friday, while No. 3 South Jefferson (8-6) and Oneida (5-13) moved their match to an 11 a.m. Saturday start.

Cooperstown (14-2), seeded third in Class C, scheduled its first playoff match for Saturday at 11:30 a.m. from the start, and the Hawkeyes will host No. 6 Little Falls (14-3) after the Mounties came back from a 2-1 deficit at home to beat Westmoreland in five games Wednesday; sophomore Ava Ruggerio matched her varsity high with 20 kills for Little Falls, while junior Kalissa Koch and senior libero Paige Morrone combined to serve nine of the team’s 12 aces.

Friday’s weather moved No. 2 Beaver River (15-0), the defending champion and winner of 33 consecutive matches, and No. 7 Dolgeville (11-6) to Saturday afternoon. Dolgeville was a 3-1 winner over Sauquoit Valley, a match that saw Victoria Galletta served eight aces, and Grace Seeley and Gracee Marino each serve six. The Blue Devils won the first two games and closed out the match in four after Sauquoit Valley took Game 3.

Mt. Markham (16-0), the undefeated No. 1 seed, hosts No. 8 South Lewis (13-7), a 3-0 winner over Port Byron Tuesday in the one match originally planned for Friday, and No. 4 Tully (15-3) and No. 5 Morrisville-Eaton (15-3) were postponed from Thursday. Morrisville-Eaton swept Lowville Academy in its playoff opener Tuesday while Tully defeated Clinton by the same score.

All four Class D quarterfinals wound up on Friday; three started there, and the match between No. 2 New York Mills (14-4) and No. 7 Manlius-Pebble Hill (7-8) was postponed from Thursday. Nos. 3 Sandy Creek (11-6) and 4 Fabius-Pompey (11-6) play at home against No. 6 Remsen (9-7) and No. 5 Town of Webb (10-6), while undefeated and top-seeded Cincinnatus (12-0) gets No. 9 Owen D. Young/Richfield Springs (6-11), the only team to win on the road in the first round. Owen D. Young/Richfield Springs won 3-1 at No. 8 McGraw Tuesday. Town of Webb and Remsen defeated Waterville and DeRuyter by matching 3-0 scores, respectively.
