The Borussia Dortmund women’s handball team won a valuable victory to move to second place in the league.
Dortmund defeated FRISCH AUF Göpingen 32-30 in the 15th round of the women’s handball Bundesliga in the 2024/25 season at Sporthalle Wellinghofen in Dortmund, Germany on the 2nd (local time).
Dortmund, which escaped from two consecutive losses, rose to second place with 11 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses (23 points), while Göpingen remained eighth with 5 wins and 9 losses (10 points).
In the match, Dortmund led the attack with seven goals by Haruno Sasaki, five by Deborah Lasource, and four by Alicia Langer and Dana Bleckmann.
On top of that, goalkeeper Sarah Wachter played a decisive role in the team’s victory with 13 saves. He blocked Goffingen’s 7-meter penalty shot at the end of the game to set the match up.
Goffing also showed a formidable performance and dogged Dortmund persistently. Sarah Irmler scored nine goals and Lea Neubrand and Luisa Scherer scored five each. In addition, three goalkeepers responded to Dortmund’s offensive with a total of 10 saves, but they did not prevent defeat in the end.
Early in the game, Dortmund gained momentum and led 3-0 within three minutes. However, Goffingen started a counterattack by chasing Sarah Irmler to 4-3 with a goal.
Dortmund widened the gap to 7-3 thanks to a series of good saves by Dortmund goalkeeper Sarah Bakhter, which was followed by a battle. Goffingen followed 15-14 at the end of the first half with consecutive goals from Leah Neublander, but Dortmund added two more goals to finish the first half 19-16.
In the second half, Goffingen tied the game 21-21 with back-to-back goals from Sarah Irmler and Sina Ehmann, bringing the game back to square one. In the process, Dortmund was struggling with poor shooting accuracy.
However, Dortmund took the lead again, and Goffingen persistently followed and a close game was held until the end.
In particular, just before the end of the game, Goffingen was trailing 30-31 and won a 7-meter penalty, but missed the opportunity to tie the game. Dortmund then failed to score an extra goal, but Deborah Lasers scored her fifth goal in the final minute to seal the victory 32-30.
Goffingen coach Nico Kiener said on his website, “It’s a shame that we couldn’t bring the points, but the players showed very good performance. In the end, a small difference determined the outcome. But with today’s performance, we can expect a good result in the derby against Metzingen next week.
Meanwhile, Dortmund manager Henk Groener praised the opposing team, saying, “It is a natural result that Goffingen ranked eighth in the league, and we will maintain that position at the end of the season.”
