CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard men’s volleyball (3-4, 1-0 EIVA) began EIVA play by snapping Penn State’s (0-7, 0-1 EIVA) 38-match conference win streak with a 3-0 sweep.
The Crimson were led by a balanced offensive attack and a career-night of 10 kills from first-year Sawyer Nichols as it collected its first win over the Nittany Lions since 2018.
How it Happened
In front of a packed Malkin Athletic Center, the Crimson came out hot, rattling off a 7-1 run to take a convincing 8-4 advantage. The Nittany Lions regrouped, going on its own 4-0 run to tie the contest at eight-all. Penn State continued its run through the middle portion of the frame, tallying another long run to grow its lead out to 13-9. Unfazed by the Nittany Lions run, the Crimson came back with four straight points to regain its advantage at 17-15. With the help of strong serving from Quinn Bishop down the stretch, Harvard closed the set 25-21 in its favor.
Harvard continued to dictate the match early in the second set, opening with a 6-3 lead to force a Penn State timeout. Out of the break, the Nittany Lions recorded three straight points to tie the contest. A back-and-forth battle ensued after Penn State evened the frame, forcing seven ties. The Crimson again took over momentum, using a 6-1 run to catapult into a 19-14 lead. Holding off any late set heroics, Harvard built its lead to 2-0 with a 25-22 final decision in the second.

The Crimson carried its momentum directly into the third frame, collecting the opening four points. As Penn State pulled within one, another strong, 4-1 Harvard run put its lead back up to four and forced a timeout. With its advantage, Harvard controlled the remainder of the set, never letting the Nittany Lions cut the deficit below three. Ultimately, a 25-19 final set solidified Harvard’s 3-0 sweep over Penn State.
